New options of CHKDSK in Windows 10 and Windows 8 you need to know -

CHKDSK is the tool of integrated console in Windows to check and fix file system errors. It starts automatically when Windows starts if your hard disk partition was marked dirty due to improper shutdown, or because of corruption or bad sectors. The user can manually start it connects to an external drive or wants to check an existing local partition or drive for errors manually. In Windows 10 and Windows 8, CHKDSK has new features compared to Windows 7.

chkdsk logo banner Since Windows 8, Microsoft has improved the NTFS health model and enhanced corruption file system is so fixed in order to minimize downtime due to CHKDSK. For NTFS, the following new switches have been added :.

  • / scan - Performs an online analysis on the specified partition
  • / forceofflinefix - Bypass all repairs online; all defects are waiting for repair offline (ie chkdsk / spotfix). Should not be used without "/scan".
  • / PERF - uses more system resources to complete a scan as soon as possible. This can have a negative performance impact on other tasks

  • / spotfix - Execute attachment spot on the specified volume
  • / sdcleanup -. Garbage collecting unnecessary data security descriptor. Must be used with "/F".
  • / offlinescanandfix -. Execute an offline scan on the specified volume and corrects errors if any corruption is detected

In Windows 10, CHKDSK got updated again and new switches for FAT / FAT32 and exFAT volumes. These switches are

  • / freeorphanedchains Free all cluster chains orphans instead of getting their content
  • / markclean Marks own volume if no corruption was detected, although " / F ". has not been set.

so if you need to check your hard disk for errors, keep in mind these new options. You can get more information about available command line arguments by running the following command at the command prompt: chkdsk /?.
