How to save the Start Menu layout in Windows 10 -

In Windows 10 Microsoft relaunched the Start menu, which was welcomed by many users. Compared to the Start Menu in previous versions of Windows, the new menu is updated with the ability to pin live tiles modern applications. You can customize the Start menu in Windows 10 by pinning various items on the left side or the right side of the menu and changing its height by resizing it from the top edge. Once you have customized to your taste, it is a good idea to create a backup of your Start Layout menu, so you'll be able to restore the configuration later, after Windows reinstall, or if you start the menu settings get reset accidentally. Here's how you can do it.

To backup startup layout menu in Windows 10 build 10240 and above, you must do the following.

  1. Enable the built-in Windows administrator account 10.
  2. log out of your Windows user account 10 and connect with the administrator account that you just activated. Windows 10 login with administrator
  3. When logged in as an administrator, make sure File Explorer Show hidden files and folders as described in How to hide files unhide quickly in Windows 10. Windows 10 show hidden items
  4. now, go to the following folder:
     C:  Users    AppData  local  TileDataLayer 

    Replace part with the user's name including the Start menu layout you need backup. In my case, the user name is "winaero" Windows 10 tiledatalayer folder

  5. There you will see the folder named database . It contains information on the tiles and the Start menu layout associated with the selected account. To save the startup layout menu in Windows 10 , you need to make a copy of this file.
  6. Log from the Administrator account and disable it.

Later, you can restore your Start menu layout as follows.

  1. Enable the built-in administrator account in Windows 10.
  2. Sign from your Windows 10 user account and log in with the administrator account that you just activated
  3. When you logged on as an administrator, make sure file Explorer Show hidden files and folders
  4. Delete the folder
     C: ..  Users    AppData  local  TileDataLayer  Database 

    Replace the part with the name of the user whose Start menu layout that you need to restore.

  5. Now, paste the copy of the database file you created in the TileDataLayer folder.
  6. disconnect and disable the Administrator account.

You must save this file as described below:

  1. Open a command prompt and type high
     cd / d% LocalAppData%  Microsoft  Windows  

    cmd in appdata

  2. do not close this window, leave it open, you will need it later. Then you must leave the Explorer shell because it uses this file and can write data there.     There. Now you have a backup of your Start menu layout in Windows 10.

  4. Run Explorer again. Press Ctrl . + Shift + Esc keys together on your keyboard It will open the task Manager Select file. -> new task Run and type explorer in the dialog box "Create new task '

    Restore the backup of your Start menu layout

    After you reinstall your operating system, you will be able to restore the menu setting Quick Start page. You must perform these simple steps:

    1. Open an elevated command prompt
    2. Exit Explorer
    3. Enter the following command: ..

    4. Start Explorer again.
