Since Windows Vista, Microsoft has added a new security feature called User Account Control (UAC). It attempts to prevent malicious applications from making potentially harmful things to your PC. Before the administrator (high) level action is allowed, UAC asks the user's permission to go ahead with it, or cancel the request. UAC has some parameters that can influence their behavior. In this article we will see how to change these settings in Windows 10.
UAC settings are located in the panel "classic" control in Windows 10. Open control Panel and go to the category:
control Panel system and security security and Maintenance
Click change user account control settings link on the left:
the user account control settings window appears on the screen:
on the left you will see a vertical slider that controls the UAC settings. It has four preset positions:
- Never Notify
- Tell me that when applications attempt to make changes to my computer (do not dim my desktop)
- Notify me when applications attempt to make changes to my computer (default)
- always tell me
These settings change the UAC behavior in different ways.
Never Notify (disables UAC)
The "never notify option disables UAC and disables the security warnings. UAC will not follow the applications. I do not recommend using this level UAC unless you fully understand why you need to disable UAC. It is the safest option. Please read the following article: How to turn off and disable UAC in Windows 10.
Tell me that when applications attempt to make changes to my computer (do not dim my desktop )
This setting is almost like the default. When changes in the level of system application requests, you will see the warning of appropriate security, however, the screen does not turn dark behind the warning dialog box. Because the screen is not dimmed, malicious applications can interact with the security of UAC dialog box and automatically try to click Yes to continue the action. So turn off the Secure Desktop is a potential security hole, as some app can confirm the application for you and damage your operating system and data.
If you work in limited user account / standard and use the UAC level, then you may need to provide administrator account credentials (user name and password pass) to raise.
Tell me that when applications attempt to make changes to my computer (default)
This parameter is default setting in Windows 8.1. When some app requests permission to complete a potentially dangerous action, you will see the appropriate warning and safety across the screen will be dimmed behind the UAC confirmation dialog. When the screen is dimmed, no other applications can access this dialog box so that the user can interact with him to confirm or deny the request.
Always notify me
This parameter is the safest (and most annoying). When enabled, UAC displays notifications whenever an application tries to make changes to the entire operating system settings system, or even when the user attempts to configure settings Windows that require administrator permissions. Besides the UAC prompt, the entire screen is dimmed. If you work in a Limited User account, you might need to provide administrative account information.
How to change the UAC settings via Registry
UAC settings are stored in the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SOFTWARE Microsoft Windows CurrentVersion Policies system
There you have to adjust the following four DWORD values:
- ConsentPromptBehaviorAdmin
- ConsentPromptBehaviorUser
- EnableLUA
- PromptOnSecureDesktop
For 'never Notify "setting, set as follows:
- ConsentPromptBehaviorAdmin = 0
- ConsentPromptBehaviorUser = 0
- EnableLUA = 1
- PromptOnSecureDesktop = 0
to "Tell me ..." without dimming the screen, the values must be:
- ConsentPromptBehaviorAdmin = 5
- ConsentPromptBehaviorUser = 3
- EnableLUA = 1
- PromptOnSecureDesktop = 0
for 'Notify me ... with dimming the screen, the values should be as follows:
- ConsentPromptBehaviorAdmin = 5
- ConsentPromptBehaviorUser = 3
- EnableLUA = 1
- PromptOnSecureDesktop = 1
For "always notify", set the following values:
- ConsentPromptBehaviorAdmin = 2
- ConsentPromptBehaviorUser = 3
- EnableLUA = 1
- PromptOnSecureDesktop = 1
After changing these values you must restart Windows for the change to take effect. That's all. This tutorial also applies to Windows 8 and Windows 8.1.
